Call for Submissions: Telling It Bent Writing Workshop – Deadline Extended

The Frank Theatre is pleased to announce that applications are now open for Telling It Bent. 

We will now be accepting submissions till January 12th 2020 at midnight!

[TIB] is a writing workshop for queer, trans, Two Spirit, and questioning BC youth – ages 14 to 25. The program gives writers a chance to gain skills, meet other queer young people, and explore different styles of writing. This year, the focus will be on playwrighting and slam poetry!

WHEN: The Writing Cohort will meet weekly, every Wednesday from 4pm – 6pm between January 15th – April 28th 2020;

WHERE: Weekly writing sessions at The Cultch’s Meeting Room, 1895 Venables St

Final Showcase at IGNITE! Youth Driven Arts Festival at  The Cultch Historic Theatre in May 2020

COMPENSATION: $500 honorarium upon completion of the project. 

The program will be facilitated by Tawahum Bige – a Two Spirit Nonbinary Slam Poet. Playwrighting mentors include Quelemia Sparrow [actor, writer and director from the Musqueam Nation] and JD Derbyshire [theatre-maker and comedian, writer/performer of Touchstone Theatre’s “Certified”.]

We encourage and welcome applicants from all cultural, ability and socio-economic backgrounds. We will be meeting in wheelchair accessible spaces with trans-inclusive washrooms. We especially encourage submission from QTBIPOC (Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, People of Colour), with two spots reserved for Two Spirit/Indigenous youth. We will select  ten participants.

Participants must be:

  • Between the ages of 14 and 25
  • Identify as queer, trans, non-binary, Two Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, on the asexual spectrum and/or questioning.
  • Located in the Greater Vancouver area OR located outside of Greater Vancouver Lower Mainland (within BC) with access to a computer, webcam, microphone and high-speed internet
  • Please note The Frank Theatre is reserving 2 spots for Two Spirit or indigenous youth.
